Watson hails composed performance as Crawley beat Canterbury

Canterbury III 1 Crawley 5

Captain Alex Watson praised Crawley’s composuree and discipline as they beat Canterbury III 5-1.

The win keeps Crawley at the top of Division Two, and skipper Watson is challenging his side to view each of their remaining league fixtures as a “cup final”.
It was a good performance from us; very composed and disciplined,” he said. “Having no yellow cards helped and we didn’t let them get to us even though they were playing what can only be described as rugby at times.

“It’s another five goals and three points, which is the important part. We have to keep rolling on doing our bit. It’s in our hands at the moment.

“We basically have to see it as every game is a cup final and we will eventually reach the end of the season where we want to be.

“The defence played excellent against Canterbury and really restricted what they could do attacking-wise. We pressed well and didn’t give them much chance to settle and they had to hit long hopeful balls all afternoon.”

It wasn’t long before a goal came for the visitors with the home side playing a high line it allowed an aerial ball from the back from Mark Brightwell into an empty half a pitch for Seb Watson to run on to one touch to take it into the circle and one touch to fire the ball through the keeper’s legs.

This was only the start of the bombardment as Kieran Fuller, Reece Banton and Seb Watson all had chances to extend the lead.

The second soon followed though a sweeping team move which found Steve Innes on the back post to donk the ball past the keeper.

The high line didn’t seem to be working for Canterbury and they were vulnerable on the counterattack to a fast paced Crawley side.

The second half started much the same as the first with Crawley breaking from deep at pace and the defence keeping resolute and solid.

The lead was extended as the captain Alex Watson got on the score sheet with a shot from a short corner which went through the keeper and made it 3-0.

Canterbury pulled a goal back but this spurred on Crawley and they managed to bundle the ball in again as Fuller got loose on the right and his miss-hit cross found Seb Watson, who walked the ball into the net.

Banton picked up an injury as he helped the Canterbury players defend their goal by blocking a shot from Complete Tyre Services’ man of the match Seb Watson. However as the time wore down, up stepped Fuller from a short corner to put the icing on the cake and make it 5-1.

Crawley: Jamie Westwood, Baz Ahmedi, Joseph Raddoux, Mark Brightwell, Rob Gate, Brendan Maccoilte, Alex Watson (C), Carl Wright, Steve Innes, Kieran Fuller, Seb Watson.

Subs: Reece Banton
