Watson double keeps Crawley sitting pretty

CRAWLEY came from behind to beat Cliftonville at a snowy Hazelwick School, and skipper Alex Watson believes his side should have won by a more emphatic scoreline.

The win maintains Crawley's position at the top of Division Two and Watson has called for focus ahead of another busy weekend.

"It was a pretty ugly start to the game from us – we just didn't seem to get up to speed until Cliftonville scored," he said. "Once they did, we were off and running and in the end we won with plenty in hand.

"It was just disappointing that we couldn't have added any other goals but it keeps us top of the league.

"It's still in our hands we have a double-header this weekend, which is very important in our season as we have league on Saturday and the cup game on Sunday."

Crawley seemed a little off the pace for the first period of the game with the defence making some key tackles and interceptions.

However, it seemed only a matter of time before the visitors broke the deadlock and after the ball bobbled around the Crawley area a Cliftonville forward hit a reverse-stick shot past a helpless Jamie Westwood.

This seemed to be the spark Crawley needed to jolt them into life as the ball started being moved around the pitch much quicker and the Cliftonville defence struggled with the pace and power of the attacks.

The home side levelled the game up just before half-time when Rob Gate, picking up a pass from Maccaoilte and driving into the circle, hit a reverse-stick shot past the keeper.

Crawley started much the better in the second period and they should have taken the lead through Reece Banton but his first touch let him down.

Crawley finally took the lead as Seb Watson and Steve Innes worked a short-corner routine for Seb Watson to score.

This deflated Cliftonville and a third soon followed as Baz Ahmedi went on a mazy run into the circle and was denied by the keeper, only for Seb Watson to get the ball off the keeper's pads with a reverse-stick shot to make it 3-1.
