Boss Frimley pleased with Crawley's clean sheet

MANAGER Keith Frimley was delighted to see Crawley keep a clean sheet as they beat Mid Sussex 5-0 on Saturday.

After Mid Sussex surprised the form book earlier in the season by beating Crawley 2-1, the return saw Crawley outclass their local rivals and Frimley praised the performance of goalkeeper Jamie Westwood, the Complete Tyres man of the match.

"Westers made a great couple of outstanding saves to prevent Mids getting back into the game, which really helped the positivity of the side," the manager said.

"That was only our fourth clean sheet of the season, and I really want to ensure we get a few more.

"I'd also like to congratulate Seb Watson and Sarah Brydon on the birth of Nathanial, which is why he missed the game."

Crawley thought they put themselves 1-0 up within ten minutes when Carl Wright rifled a ball into the top corner of the goal, only to be denied the goal as the umpire thought this had been the first shot on goal from a short corner.

Despite the setback, Crawley took the game to Mids and further changes fell to Reece Banton and Kieran Fuller, before the latter fired home.

With a great run down the right flank, cutting into the D, Rob Gate gained his first assist of the season. Many of the players surprised to see the ball not go off the end of the pitch before Gate found Steve Innes, to dink the ball in from close range.

Another goal from Adrian Bettesworth put Crawley 3-0 up before half-time.

In the second half Crawley scored two more goals – another Fuller short corner and a shot form Wright that the keeper could only parry into the top of the goal.

Crawley had a number of further chances in the game with Jimmy Ortyl, playing as an attacker for the first time, having two attempts well saved by the Mids keeper, but they had to settle for a five-goal margin.

Crawley remain top of the league after this emphatic victory but have a really difficult home game against Gillingham on Saturday, when there is a 1.30pm push-back at Hazelwick.
