Crawley Hockey Club stay on course with Sevenoaks draw

CRAWLEY narrowed the gap on league leaders Holcombe to just two points after drawing with Sevenoaks II on Saturday.

Sevenoaks rushed to a 2-0 lead but Adrian Bettesworth converted after a short corner just before half-time before Complete Tyre Services man of the match Steve Innes scored Crawley's equaliser in the second half.

Nerves have got the better of the top two teams in Division Two in recent weeks, with both Crawley and Holcombe slipping up, but skipper Alex Watson was content with a point from the weekend's fixture.

"We haven't played at our best the last two weeks and we needed to take advantage in hope of closing the three-point gap we lost two weeks ago at Holcombe," Watson explained.

"But we fought well and it's never easy to go there and win. We would have taken the point on offer at the beginning.

"It was a strange game. They seemed unable to cope when we moved the ball around and so on many occasions spoiled the game as they were overloaded at times at the back but we are satisfied.

"Holcombe lost for the second week running so we are back to two-point deficit, with a game in hand and three games to play."

Crawley face a league and cup double-header this weekend as they host Brighton & Hove on Saturday before playing their eagerly anticipated Vase semi-we final against Redbridge & Ilford on Sunday at Hazelwick School (1pm).

"It could be a massive week in our season," Watson explained. "I'd urge people to come down and to get behind the guys as we still look at bringing the league and cup double back to Crawley."
