Crawley play their best game but can't covert chances

Southwick Men's 1s 5 - 1 Crawley Men's 2s

Crawley came into this game missing 7 key players through injury, being unavailable or playing for a different side. They knew that it was going to be tough on a wet and windy day on the south coast.

Crawley looked nervous in the first 10 minutes and couldn't string two passes together giving the ball away in areas they shouldn't be. Southwick pounced on a poor pass out of defence and precisely finished low into the corner. Southwick continued to press Crawley and doubled their lead after a great one on one save by goalkeeper Rockingham could only see the rebound land to their centre forward to finish into the vacant goal. Crawley then managed to get a foothold into the game and were creating chances but could convert them until the 15th minute. Crawley won a short corner which was expertly put away by James Fuller. Crawley then felt like this was their time to get some further goals but left themselves exposed at the back. Southwick then had a number of short corners which they are able to convert 2 of them to make the score 4-1 at the break.

Crawley spoke about playing simply hockey and using the width they had to continue to create chances. Crawley came out very strong in the second half and were testing the Southwick goalkeeper but were unable to find the net. Then a great team move by Southwick saw them have a simple tap in on the back post. Both Crawley and Southwick went in search of another goal but were unable to find anymore before the final whistle. Captain Chris Rockingham commented after the game "We always knew it was going to be touch going coming to Southwick with a bare 11 but I can't fault the work-rate or attitude of any of the players on the pitch. We did not let our heads drop or attitude change from minute 1 so I praise my players for that. We have a 6 pointer next week away to local rivals East Grinstead so we must win."
