Crawley hit ten to be crowned league champions

CRAWLEY won the league title in style on Saturday with an emphatic 10-1 win over Bexleyheath & Belvedere and captain Alex Watson has dedicated it to the hard work put in by the team's coaches.

With promotion already in the bag, Crawley knew they had to win their final league game of the season to secure the title.

And despite their opponents being more than an hour late, Crawley did not lose their nerve, winning their first league title for 16 years.

"It was a excellent display in what became quite tough conditions," Watson said.

"It was hard to keep our minds on the game as we were unsure where Bexleyheath & Belvedere were but we had to keep our minds on the challenge in hand.

"Once we got the game under way we were fantastic for most of the game, barring a ten-minute spell here or there, we completely dominated all aspects of the game.

"From front to back, we each beat our opposition number and the score could have been even worse if it had not been for some truly outstanding saves by their keeper.

"It feels brilliant to have won the league, which is something the club hasn't done since 1999."

It wasn't long before Crawley were ahead; a nice pass into the area found Seb Watson unmarked and his first-time shot went under the keeper. However, the pressure was all Crawley and the goals started to flow as first Steve Innes and then Kieran Fuller and Carl Wright all scored.

The visitors did manage to get a goal though as a shot from the left of Crawley circle deflected off Rob Gate and past a helpless Jamie Westwood. However, Crawley bounced back with a well-worked short-corner routine that saw Fuller find the net again to make it 5-1 on the stroke of half-time.

The second half started with another goal for Fuller before Innes got two more and man-of the-match Carl Wright and captain Watson also scored.

Crawley now go in search of an historic double when they play in the Vase final at Lea Valley on May 2.
